As we come out of these long, grey winter months tired and sleepy-eyed there’s been a need, more than ever, for a spine straightening, eye-opening burst of energy. (insert Rockstar Payso)
The sun started showing its face this past week as we linked up to shoot with the party starter, Payso. We met the Brooklyn rapper on the streets of SoHo last year rolling with the producer duo Take A Daytrip who’s recently been garnering major public attention, but that’s a different story. We were immediately drawn to Payso’s energy. It’s full-on infectious like a virus that causes the muscles in your face to tighten into a permanent smile and your neck to grow so loose that it’d be impossible not to bob your head.
He’s been bubbling in the New York scene for a while, most notably opening up for OutKast’s Big Boi and for the now incarcerated YNW Melly who he was previously set to go on tour with this year before Melly’s murder charges.
On stage, Payso commands attention, knowing just exactly how to tap into an audiences animalistic personalities. He’ll get a man in a suit to turn into Tarzan, a woman in a pencil skirt to erase all inhibitions: stage diving, crowd surfing, mosh pitting Payso.
So close to major exposure, he is careful with who he aligns and aware of the dangers of signing to major labels as still a developing artist. For now, he’s hard at work in the studio laying down new tracks and perfecting his sound.
